On the first run through the Knockboy stage Derek McGarrity’s Subaru stopped the clock on 6m01s. On the 2nd visit this evening his time was 6m31s. There were two main differences. One was that the roads were wet this time and the second reason was that Derek stalled the car on the start line of the stage and dropped quite a few seconds. This left Tim McNulty fastest by 10s and reduced McGarrity’s leading margin to just 8s. There are 2 more stages this evening, Glendun and Torr Head. Darragh O’Riordan picked the wrong tyres for the first loop of stages this afternoon and it looks like he is on the wrong tyres again, having picked a dry weather pattern. Cork man Darragh didn’t know of course that the rain was sweeping over the Co. Antrim hills. Darren Gass also picked a wrong tyre and he has dropped 25s to McNulty.
In the Ni Rally Jonny Greer dropped time on stage 4, over 50s down on fastest man Garry Jennings. Jonny just said at stage finish that he was unsettled and wasn’t happy. Jennings had problems as well, his car filling up with smoke from what seemed to be an oil leak. David Bogies had a lucky escape when he ran over a rock early in the stage, the same one that caused Elfyn Evans’ puncture earlier. Elfyn had a good run this time. Marty McCormack was fastest of the BRC runners and that was despite the wet roads that in theory should not have suited the 2 wheel drive Citroen. Tommy Doyle was 8s down on McCormack, his Clio suffering a misted up windscreen.
At service after 3 stages Dessie Nutt led category 1 in the Historic Rally, his Porsche 1m44s ahead of the similar 911 of Rikki Proffitt with Derek & Roisin Boyd 3rd in their Porsche. David Stokes had a 36s lead in Historic category 2 ahead of the similar Escort of Mark Falvey. Category 3 was led by Tomas Davies in his Escort from Rob Smith. Last year’s winner Conor Corkill 3rd.
