Through the first 2 stages this morning, Langford Lodge and Tardree, Tim McNulty was fastest of the world rally cars. Garry Jennings was the quickest of the NI Rally contenders through Langford and Jonny Greer was best through Tardree. Overall Ulster Rally leader Derek McGarrity said after Tardree, one of his favourite stages, “There’s just nothing left in the car”. Tim McNulty said he had a good clean run while Darren Gass feels that the suspension in his Subaru, which is quite old, isn’t coping with the bumps so well. Darren did have the differentials re-mapped on his Impreza and that has improved things somewhat.
In Rally NI Garry Jennings felt that that he had picked slightly too soft a compound tyre this morning, and in fact seems to be a bit short of tyres. Jonny Greer reported that the wait at the start of stage 7 had allowed his Skoda’s tyres to go cold and he struggled for grip initially but then wen t well through Tardree. Jonny is happier with the car now that the rear diff has been replaced. (Apparently there is a clutch in the rear differential which facilitates the hand brake release and it was the clutch that went not the actual crown wheel and pinion). Tommy Doyle feels that his Clio isn’t just as sharp as it was last night. However, the young Longford man is trying hard and holding on to a solid 3rd place. David Bogie had 2 spins this morning, both on left hand corners, and feels that the right rear wheel of his Lancer has some looseness. Elfyn Evans had a spin in his Impreza but lost little time.
Desi Henry continues to lead the Citroen Racing Trophy. He is registered for the UK series while Kieran Daly is the top Irish contender in the Citroens. Joe McGonigle’s C2R2 suffered a misfire yesterday until the crew discovered a broken wire in the engine bay. Callum Black was 6th o/a starting today when unfortunately his Swift slid into a ditch on Langford and got stuck. Jeremy Taylor slid his Lancer into a hedge on a Langford square right, co-driver Jody Patterson reminding him this was not a Saturday to be gardening! They made the stage finish OK.
On Rally Germany Ogier was fastest through SS8 while Loeb still leads and Hirvonen is 3rd. Petter Solberg has got ahead of Kris Meeke. Alastair Fisher retired his Fiesta yesterday due to a broken rear axle beam and has re-joined today under Super Rally rules. Last year’s Rally NI winner Craig Breen is 2nd in the FIA Academy to Lomas.
