Kenny McKinstry made a real charge through stage 4 to move into the lead of this Lakeland Rally. Donagh Kelly had led when the cars left service but Donagh dropped 7s to McKinstry through the 5.5 mile Ballintempo test. After the stage Kenny said. “We pushed real hard and the car is very good”. Donagh Kelly commented. “That’s the best I could do.” Stuart Biggerstaff in 3rd said. “I’m just loving this. No problems with the car”. Ian Cochrane in 4th reckoned he was sleeping at the start of the stage and didn’t quite realise how good the grip level was, but then got the finger out on the 2nd half of the stage. Pat O’Connell continues to impress on his first visit to this Lakeland Rally and equalled Cochrane’s times through stage 4. Martin Cairns was 16th leaving service but didn’t appear in stage 4 and Kieran Graffin seems also to have gone out of the rally.

Frank Kelly set another good time to hold his position in the top 10 and best 2-wheel drive in his Escort. Shane McGirr in his Starlet dropped 5s to Frank on that stage. Shane lost his confidence a little when his Toyota suffered a bent steering arm on a heavy jump landing.

After 3 stages Jonny Leonard/Jackie Elliott led class 1 despite their Fiesta breaking a drive shaft on the way out from Fisher Engineering to the first stage. Dara Leonard and Declan Leonard were also entered in class 1 in their respective Fiestas, but both have retired. Declan’s car suffered gearbox problems while Dara’s had a fire in the engine bay and the wiring loom has melted. Stephen Baxter led class 5 in his Fiesta. Alan Atcheson was 13th o/a and led class 6, his Pedro Pet Foods Escort has had a new French built Sadev gearbox fitted for today and Atcheson reports the new box to be brilliant and generally everything going well. Amy Cox is 2nd in that class 6 although she is quite a few places behind Alan Atcheson in overall terms. Amy reports her G3 going well and a smooth run so far. Joe McGonigle is leading cl.5 in his Citroen C2R2 with Aidan Friel co-driving on this one. Joe had a narrow escape on the first stage when his Citroen clipped a bridge.

Further stories include: Brendan Cumiskey lost time in stage 3 when his Lancer suffered 2 overshoots. Tommy O’Connell put his Escort on its roof in stage 3. Trevor Elliott’s red Escort suffered some intercom problems but otherwise OK. Patsy Keenan put his Lancer into the scenery and had to retire although the damage was light. Andy Mackarel’s Calibra has been sidelined, reason as yet unknown.

On Wexford Rally Damien Cole led after 2 stages from Sebastian Ling with James Stafford 3rd. Roy White was 4th, Danny Barry 5th and Adrian Hetherington 6th. Scott McElhinney was best of the Citroen Racing Trophy contenders. His C2R2 up to 11th o/a and leading the class.
