Kenny McKinstry moved into the lead of this Lakeland Rally on stage 4, relegating Donagh Kelly to 2nd place. On stage 5 Donagh took his Lancer to the limit and beat McKinstry by 4s. Unfortunately he also broke the “bogey time” for the stage by 6s so it really didn’t better his position. Kenny also beat the “bogey” but in his case by just 2s. Donagh Kelly was faster than Kenny through stage 6, albeit by just 1s, which leaves the gap between the two at 4s with just 3 stages to go. Stuart Biggerstaff and Neil McCance also beat the bogey on stage 5. McCance had a quiet first loop of stages but really got his act into gear through stages 4, 5 and 6 and jumped from 8th to 4th place. Biggerstaff has driven a great rally so far but his Impreza WRC is now suffering a transmission oil leak, possibly as a result of a heavy landing in a jump dip.
Cashel crew Pat O’Connell/Mark Wiley have unfortunately retired their Lancer from 5th place after stage 5 when their Mitsubishi went off the road into a ditch at the end of stage 6. Ian Cochrane was up as high as 4th o/a but he lost time in stage 5 when his Lancer incurred a puncture. In the rush to make up time Ian slid the car wide on a square left in stage 6 and dropped another minute that has put him right out of the reckoning. His total now is 30.07. Ian is carrying decals for the MS Society this weekend and all efforts are being made to raise funds for this very worthwhile charity. Marc Johnston has retired his Lancer in stage 5 after the engine lapsed on to 2 cylinders. Stephen Wright has improved his position despite his Lancer suffering a puncture at the end of SS6. This cost little time and he changed the wheel on the road section. Shane McGirr’s charge after Frank Kelly in the battle for best 2 wheel drive honours took a dent when his Starlet suffered a bent steering rack following a jump in stage 4.
Frank Kelly set some superb times through that loop and he reckons that the drying roads are giving his Escort even better grip. Liam Regan in the 4wd Peugeot recounted after SS6 that the tracks are cutting up and he is having difficulty picking a line because of the rocks on the road.
