It was certainly an exciting day’s rallying on this Lakeland Stages Rally. Kenny McKinstry and his co-driver Kenny Hull forged through at the end to win by 5s in their Subaru. Donagh Kelly and his co-driver Kevin Flanagan drove a heroic rally to finish 2nd in their GpN Lancer. Stuart Biggerstaff, on only his 5th forest rally, and co-driven by Anthony Nestor, also had a fine drive to take 3rd o/a in the “family” Subaru. There were all sorts of dramas on the final stage. Neil McCance had his Lancer into 4th place but crashed on a hairpin left junction. Frank Kelly was heading for a top 6 result in his Escort but is parked up in the final stage. Stephen Wright survived a final stage puncture, as did Ian Cochrane and Liam Regan.

Kenny commented at the finish. “The rain was so bad on the final stages we could hardly see the road. It also got very rough. These were good stages today and it was a really good rally. Fair play to Donagh Kelly, he drove very well. When he came down behind us on stage 8 the marshal’s mouth dropped open as Donagh went from lock to lock.” Kenny’s win today could well have netted him the Hankook NI Rally Championship for this year. He is adamant that even if he has won the title he will contest the remaining rounds. Donagh Kelly said. “We could see nothing on the last stage, it was like driving down a river. If you touched the brakes the car just started aquaplaning. We matched or beat Kenny on 6 out of the 9 stages but on the big uphill sections the group N Lancer couldn’t match the World Rally Car.” Stuart Biggerstaff had all sorts of problems with a gearbox oil leak towards the end and the car filled with smoke, but Stuart certainly kept his head and drove really well.

Finally for now well done to Clerk of the Course Declan Gannon and all the hard working Enniskillen MC team for promoting such a fine rally today. Our thanks to everyone that helped and supported our RallyNews service.
