Fastest through stage 4 was Niall Maguire on a time of 8.53 for the 16.5km test. Second fastest was the irrepressible Frank Kelly in his Escort. The Tyrone man set a time of 8.59. Tim McNulty had led the rally going into stage 4 but his Subaru was forced to slow when he came across a horse on the road. Kevin Barrett also encountered our equine friend. McNulty’s co-driver Paul Kiely said it was a brown shire type horse and they were behind it for quite a distance. When asked did he get its name he said he thought it was “Brownie”!! Niall Maguire was also slowed behind the brown horse and he thought maybe it was Shergar……Wesley Patterson in his Escort reckoned it was the horse he backed in a race yesterday that was still running…..dum de dum….

Seriously though, the top drivers were perturbed to say the least and Sean Mullally said. “We had taken so many chances up to that and it was all a waste of time”. McNulty remarked that he had also been going hard as he had switched to a slick dry weather tyre.

Sam Moffett in the GpN Lancer came upon a dog tucked into the verge on a 3 right so it was really becoming quite a menagerie of a stage. Sam did have a good time though, he equalled his brother Josh’s time and Sam felt it was down to stiffening up the Lancer’s suspension. Shane Maguire was a bit closer to the Moffett’s time through that 4th stage and he reckoned it was down to getting used to a new type of tyre that he is using today. Mike Quinn had a few intercom problems, but was still equal with Wesley Patterson in the stage, but 6s down on Frank Kelly. When Anthony O’Halloran brought his Manta to the stage finish he was bathed in sweat and had set a time of 9.03, faster than Quinn and Patterson. Ruan man Anthony said. “I don’t think there is a lot left in the car”.

Aidan Walsh had been having steering rack problems with he Peugeot through stage 3 and we didn’t see him at the end of stage 4. Tom Ryan in the orange Corsa was held up for a while behind PJ Bonner’s crashed Focus in stage 2 and was hoping for a scratch time. Martin Kelly retired his Lancer (No.30) when the rear differential expired. Brian Duggan (rally.ie) has taken the day off from rallying to watch the All Ireland Final on the TV and he has sent us a text to say his young brother Sean, who was co-driving today for Daniel Cronin in the Peugeot, have gone out of the rally earlier. Their Peugeot hit a rock and the rock won. They are both OK and its not the end of the world for the car either.
