Following the incident with the horse on the road in stage 4 normal service was resumed through stages 5 and 6 with Tim McNulty fastest on both stages. In stage 5 in particular McNulty really went for it and his time was 15s faster than Niall Maguire and 23s up on Kevin Barrett. At service after stage 6 Tim reported all well and remarked that the roads are still greasy and slippy and that he was pushing hard following the problem with the horse. Niall Maguire’s Subaru had a soft brake pedal on stage 6 and he had to resort to the hand brake to slow for a chicane that cost some time. In fact Niall dropped 8s to Kevin Barrett and 17s to McNulty.

Wesley Patterson had a great run through stages 5 and 6 to reinforce his 4th position and open up an 8s gap to Sam Moffett in 5th. Sam continues to lead group N and reports that he is very happy with the adjustments to his Lancer’s suspension. Unfortunately his brother Josh, who was leading GpN, has departed the fray in stage 5 when his Lancer got caught out on a series of bumps and went off the road, damaging a wheel. Also out of the rally is Washington James, his Darrian reportedly off the road in stage 6. Ed O’Callaghan is still going but dropped out of contention when he lost several minutes in stage 4 when he banged a wheel at a chicane. Mike Quinn had a lucky escape in stage 6 when his Escort overheated. This was possibly caused by a broken fan belt and the damage is being assessed here at service.

Frank Kelly lost some time when he stopped to check that Josh Moffett and co driver Ciaran Geaney were both OK, otherwise Frank has been setting some great times. Tom Ryan/Ciara O’Connell have retired their Corsa in stage 5. Just outside the leaderboard Michael Curran/Sean Hayde are having a good run in their Escort, just ahead of Richard Burke & Pat Kelly in their respective Escorts. Stephen Carey/Breda O’Driscoll are leading Cl.3 and 15th o/a after SS5. Neil Pierce was 16th o/a and leading cl.11 by just 1s from fellow Civic driver Alan Shiel. In the Junior section of the event Chris Snow was leading but has put his Civic off the road. Cal McCarthy now leads in his Civic.
